This highly sought after American rye has a soft nose of chestnuts, spice, vanilla and fruit. It features flavors of cocoa, vanilla, spice, and white pepper.
Up until his death in 1965, "Pappy" was the oldest active distiller in the nation at the age of 91. The next in the Van Winkle generation, Julian P. Van Winkle, Jr., became president of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in 1947.
Julian III took over the business in 1981 after his father passed away. He was 32 years old with a wife and four young children. The premium bourbon business was in a lull, but 90 years ago, Pappy started from the ground up, too.
Pappy Van Winkle Family reserve rye 13 year. This 13-year breaks the mold as it is one of the oldest rye whiskeys available today. The maturity it has achieved while aging is quite obvious when you take the first sip. Flavors include cocoa, vanilla, spice, and white pepper.
It is distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve is often regarded as one of the finest bourbons in the world, and its very low production and high demand can make it extremely difficult to find.
