Having acquired the rums he needed to recreate the Royal Navy's blend he needed somewhere to do the blending and bottling so Charles constructed a small plant on the Island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
Thus in 1655, the daily beer ration was replaced with rum, a special blend of five Caribbean rums concocted by the Navy's victualling yards. Since this unique rum was under the control of and issued by the Purser, it was aptly named “Pusser's Rum”.
From around 1655, a pint of rum was the usual ration handed to each sailor in the Royal Navy. It was served every day, half at 12 noon and the second half at about 5 or 6pm (though the amount decreased in following years). The rum ration was known as 'Pusser's Rum'.
Pusser's is the original navy rum as served on warships of Great Britain's Royal Navy from about 1655 to 1970. Pusser's 350 years of liquid history has become the standard by which other dark rums are measured.
Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength and in accordance with the Admiralty's blending recipe last used when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration on 31 July 1970.
Several countries, including Jamaica, Trinidad, and Guyana, produced rum. The Navy would drink a blend of rums from all of these countries, as well as many others. Today the rum is produced in Guyana and made of a blend of Guyanese rums, which create its unique, strong taste.
