Distillery Information

Produced at the Hotaling & Co. Distillery (formerly Anchor Distillery) in San Francisco, this bold whiskey was copper pot-distilled from a mash of 100% malted rye and aged in hand-made charred oak barrels.
It's distilled in a small copper pot still at the Hotaling & Co. Distillery on San Francisco's Potrero Hill from a mash of 100% rye malt, with rye being the grain of choice for America's first distillers.
In the United States, rye whiskey is, by law, made from a mash of at least 51 percent rye. (The other ingredients in the mash are usually corn and malted barley.) It is distilled to no more than 160 U.S. proof (80% abv) and aged in charred, new oak barrels.
Most people are familiar with the term for scotch single malts- which are made from 100% malted barley. By law, any whiskey labeled as 'rye' whiskey has to be made from a mashbill of at least 51% rye grains and the rest can be any combination of corn, barley, wheat, or whatever.
It's not a commonly used expression, but it does have a definition and a clear demarcation from its non straight counterpart. Aging for a straight rye must be at least two years and if it's less than four years, the bottle must notate the age.
The original Anchor Distilling Company was established in 1993 by Fritz Maytag, the same beverage visionary who sparked the craft beer movement with his purchase of Anchor Brewing in 1965.
