Wheated bourbon simply means that there is wheat in the mash bill. Bourbon must have at least 51 percent corn, and the rest is usually rye and malted barley. With wheated bourbon, wheat is either added to the mas bill to make it a four-grain bourbon, or used as a substitute for the rye.The Original Wheated Bourbon Whiskey features an exceptionally smooth taste, substituting wheat for rye grain. Bottled at 90 proof, this bourbon stands out with its burnt orange color. Its softer flavor notes make this bourbon great for sipping or making cocktails.
The bourbon was named after William Larue Weller (1825–1899), who was a distiller in the early days of Kentucky. He was supposedly the first to produce straight bourbon using wheat instead of rye in the mashbill. His wheated bourbon was first produced in 1849.

Though Old Elk would later get their own still up and running in Fort Collins, the MGP distillations formed the base for Old Elk's products and continue to be the primary distillation source at an estimated 95% of overall production.
