Distillery Information

Yoichi Single Malt is a range of single malt expressions from the Yoichi Distillery, Nikka's first distillery built in 1934. The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose the town of Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he learned whisky-making.
Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of Japanese whisky, founded the Nikka distillery in the 1930s. Today you can visit the original factory, in Yoichi, a town west of Sapporo, close to Otaru.
Nikka boast two very different distilleries Yoichi Distillery first produced distillate in 1936 (North) and Miyagikyo Distillery (central) opened in 1969. Nikka have there own bottling plant and also boast one of the largest offerings in Japan.
The company operates a number of distilleries and other facilities in Japan, including two Japanese whisky distilleries, the Yoichi distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaidō (established in 1934), and the Miyagikyo distillery in Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Northern Honshū (established in 1969).
A single malt is a whisky made exclusively from barley that has been malted and then distilled in a traditional pot still, and must have been aged in oak casks for at least three years. A Japanese single malt is a blend of malt whiskies of different ages and casks, all from the same distillery in Japan.
Japanese whisky is often distilled twice, much like Scottish single malt whisky. However, there are some Japanese whiskies that are distilled up to four times, which is far more than any Scottish distillery will do.
