Laphroaig Select derives its name from a meticulous cask selection process that includes both American and European casks, chosen for their distinctive influence during maturation. Our inspiration for this global expression is drawn from a pivotal period in Laphroaig's history, specifically the era of Ian Hunter, the last family member owner of the distillery, some 70-80 years ago.
Ian Hunter, a significant figure in Laphroaig's history, was a pioneering force. He ventured to bourbon county in the USA during a time when he was the distillery's owner. His objective was to discover novel cask sources that could impart greater consistency and introduce new flavors to Laphroaig. Ian skillfully married this "new" style of Laphroaig with the traditionally matured European cask version.
Inspired by Ian's early work, our approach involves the use of Oloroso sherry butts, virgin American white oak (previously unused for bourbon), PX seasoned hogsheads, Quarter Casks, and, of course, first-fill Bourbon Casks. This diverse cask maturation technique allowed us to craft six distinct flavor combinations. These were then meticulously tested with our Friends of Laphroaig (FOLs) community, who played a crucial role in selecting their favorite style and ultimately naming the expression. The winning flavor and name, chosen by our dedicated community, is none other than LAPHROAIG SELECT.
