Unlike most distilleries, we infuse the barley with peat smoke before we dry it. For 17 hours the smoke (or 'peat reek') rises through a perforated drying floor into the kiln. The vapourised oils – the peat's phenolic compounds and other wood-based smoky flavours – are then absorbed by the damp barley.
The distillery and brand are owned and operated by Beam Suntory, the American subsidiary of Japan's Suntory Holdings.
This unique and exclusive bottle, called The Bessie Williamson Story™, is a tribute to Bessie and her work at Laphroaig, along with her warm, rich and unmistakably-Islay character. Williamson was born in Glasgow in 1910 to John Williamson, a gunner in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery and Agnes Whyte.
Laphroaig 10 year old is undoubtedly one of the all time great malt whiskies from Scotland. Its idiosyncratic peaty character stands out among other Islay malts and it continues to be one of the best value for money drams.
