Its origin is attributed to Franciscus Sylvius, a 17th-century professor of medicine at the University of Leiden in Holland, who distilled the juniper berry with spirits to produce an inexpensive medicine having the diuretic properties of juniper-berry oil.It uses 10 botanicals including cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger to create a warming character with woody sweet spice. The signature serve is with ginger ale as an alternative to tonic. Botanicals: Cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, cloves, ginger, juniper, cassia, coriander seeds, grains of paradise, angelica root.
The most traditional and still the most common method for gin distillation. A mix of juniper and other botanicals is steeped in neutral spirit which has been reduced in strength with water (normally to approx. 50% alc./vol.).
Like many of Britain's national favourites, gin did not originate on our shores. In fact, if you don't count the Italian monks who are thought to have used juniper berries as flavourings in distilled spirits back in the 11th century, it's Holland that's credited as the birthplace of gin.Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane byproducts, such as molasse. Gin is normally distilled from 14-15 botanicals. Alcohol content is about the same as cognac and whiskey.
