Distillery Information

Hawaiian Distillers made Hana Bay rum from around the 1980s forwards and in 2002 it switched to being made in Kentucky by the brand owners at the time, Heaven Hill, who had acquired the brand from the Levecke Corporation in that year. The still converts the alcohols to vapor form and then returns it to liquid through a condenser. The purest part is then aged in American White Oak barrels with a #3 or #4 char that previously held Laws Whiskey made in Colorado. It includes both the light-bodied rums, typified by those of Cuba and Puerto Rico, and the heavier and fuller-flavoured rums of Jamaica. Rums originated in the West Indies and are first mentioned in records from Barbados in about 1650. They were called “kill-devil” or “rumbullion” and by 1667 were simply called rum.
The history of gold rum can be traced back to the Caribbean, where rum production began in the 17th century. The first rums produced in the Caribbean were made from molasses, which was a byproduct of the sugar cane industry.
The Invention of Bay Rum | In 1838, Danish chemist Albert Heinrich Riise became interested in this local remedy and discovered that by mixing St John bay leaf oils with fine Virgin Island rums, it created an amazing fragrance.
On neighbor islands, there's also a variety of Hawaii distilleries and wineries that offer tours and tasting rooms. Think Ocean Organic Vodka (Kula Maui), MauiWine (Kula, Maui), Kōloa Rum (Lihue, Kauai), and Volcano Winery (Volcano, Big Island), to name just a few.
