Craigellachie was built in 1891 by the experienced whisky team of Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward. They needed a Single Malt as an ingredient for White Horse Blended Scotch, so the distillery was designed to produce a very specific distillery style which the team replicate to this day.
The Craigellachie distillery lies in Banffshire in the very heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, between Rothes and Dufftown. The distillery stands alone, perched high on the rock of Craigellachie ( from which it takes its name) overlooking the confluences of the Rivers Fiddich and Spey.
The 'single' in 'single malt' simply means that the whisky is the product of a single distillery. Therefore, while a single malt can contain whisky from many different casks, all of this whisky must have been produced by one distillery.FCraigellachie produces in four stills - two spirit and two wash stills. The mash tun is made of stainless steel and there are eight fermentation tanks, each with a capacity of 45,000 liters. The water for the Craigellachie Whisky comes from the Blue Hill. The malt is obtained from central malting plants.
The transfer to SMD marked the beginning of a period of stability for Craigellachie; apart from a reconstruction in 1964-65 during which the number of pot stills was doubled, relatively little happened at the distillery. In 1998, it was sold to John Dewar & Sons. On March 1998, Diageo sold John Dewar & Sons to Bacardi.
