Rum is a spirit distilled from sugarcane or molasses but because it is predominantly made in the Caribbean, the laws aren't as strict as say, whisk(e)y laws.
This rum is aged in wooden casks, which gives it that golden color. Those wooden casks also change the flavor of the rum a bit - making this rum varietal taste more smoky-sweet. The longer rum is aged, the darker it will become. The main difference between white (or light) rum and gold rum is aging.
The history of gold rum can be traced back to the Caribbean, where rum production began in the 17th century. The first rums produced in the Caribbean were made from molasses, which was a byproduct of the sugar cane industry.
A mixture of vanilla and spice dominate the nose and follow through on a brisk entry to a buttery vanilla finish with slight hints of oak.
All rum is made from sugarcane products - including white rum. The reason that white rum is clear is due to its shorter aging period, which sometimes occurs is steel tanks.
Calypso Spiced rum is sourced out of the US Virgin Islands and imported and bottled by the Sazerac company. It appears to be a value brand meant to encroach upon the dominance of Captain Morgan and the rest of the spiced rum market.
