In 2013, the brand was given a new lease of life after being purchased by legendary French group Pernod Ricard, who have developed the Augier brand into a 'Cognac house for geeks' where every artisanal method of production is explained on the bottle's label.
Modern production methods vary depending on region, but brandy is essentially created by fermenting fruit into wine. The wine is then distilled using low heat, which concentrates the flavor and alcohol. The distillation process can happen multiple times depending on the type of brandy being made.Is cognac a whisky? While cognac is therefore a wine and a spirit, one thing certain is that cognac is not a type of whisky. On a superficial level, the confusion is understandable. Both are amber-colour spirits, the product of generations of savoir-faire with a strong affinity to their region of production.
Cognac can only be made from grapes grown in the strictly defined Cognac region of France. It must be made from the juice of at least one of three particular grapes, the most common being Ugni Blanc and the other two being Folle Blanche and Colombard.
