Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac is produced from the Pierre Ferrand estate, a 100 ha vineyard and historic distillery in the heart of the golden triangle in Grande Champagne. In the 19th century, when the modern art of the bar was born, no spirit was more prized for mixing drinks than cognac.

Maison Ferrand also co-owns Logis d Angeac, a 100-hectare (247-acre) vineyard in the heart of Grande Champagne, which features a distillery that dates back to 1776.In addition to its head office in Ars,Maison Ferrand also has an office in Viroflay, in the Paris region.

Grande Champagne is a French district, called a cru, known for its cognac. It produces the finest cognacs in a zone of 34703 hectares, of which 17% is dedicated to production of cognac, which can be marked as Grande Champagne or Grande Fine Champagne.
Cognac is distilled twice in onion-shaped copper pot stills (called alembic charentais), but unlike whisky, there is a strict timetable enforced. In the Cognac region, distillation begins towards the end of November, and must be finished by 31 March the following year.
