Crafted in the heart of Oaxaca, this artisanal spirit embodies the soul of agave distillation, offering a unique and authentic experience that captures the essence of the region's time-honored traditions.

Made from 100% agave espadin, Monte Alban Mezcal is carefully crafted through a traditional production process that includes roasting the agave hearts in earthen pits, fermenting the juice, and distilling it in copper alembic stills. This meticulous process results in a mezcal that carries the smoky signature of the agave plant, creating a truly distinctive and robust flavor profile.

What sets Monte Alban Mezcal Con Gusano apart is the inclusion of the "gusano" – a small, flavorful worm that inhabits the agave plant. Considered a delicacy by some, the gusano imparts a unique earthy note to the mezcal, enhancing its complexity and providing a sensory journey for the adventurous palate.

Presented in an artisanal bottle adorned with traditional Mexican artwork, Monte Alban Mezcal Con Gusano is a visual masterpiece that reflects the spirit's authenticity and craftsmanship. Enjoy it neat to savor the full spectrum of flavors or elevate your mezcal experience by crafting classic cocktails with a bold twist.

Distillery Information

Monte Albán is one of the most important archaeological zones in Mesoamerica. An ancient Zapotec metropolis, the site was founded in the sixth century BCE overlooking the city of Oaxaca and functioned as their capital between 500 BCE and 800 CE.
Other areas of Mexico have local terms for mezcal distillery like taberna (frequently used in Jalisco for Raicilla distilleries), fabrica (a very general term which is used in the central and northern areas of Mexico like Puebla, Estado de Mexico and San Luis Potosi), or vinata (frequently used in Durango, Michoacan .Mezcal can be made from over 30 different types of agave, but the vast majority is made from a variety known as Agave espadin. This particular kind of agave is primarily grown in Oaxaca, Mexico, a region known as the home of mezcal ( 2 ).Monte Alban is one of the most widespread Mezcals in the U.S. It is carried by many distributors and liquor stores, and (for better or worse) it is what many people associate with the word "Mezcal." Monte Alban has been making Mezcal and selling it in the U.S. for a long time.
The name mezcal comes from the Nahuatl (or Aztec) word “mexcalli” meaning an oven-cooked agave. It is believed that Spanish conquerors taught distilling techniques to the Mexican natives around 400 years ago.
