Liquor Categories: The 7 Different Types of Liquor

Sara Arj |

What defines liquor?
Liquor is both alcoholic and distilled. The process of fermentation turns sugars into alcohol. The distillation process takes alcoholic liquid and creates a higher concentration of alcohol by removing excess water. Hard alcohol typically is distilled to a high alcohol content with little to no sugar added... depending on the type of liquor which fits into 7 different liquor categories.
  1. Whiskey (or Whisky?)
  2. Vodka
  3. Gin
  4. Rum
  5. Tequila
  6. Brandy
  7. Liqueur

Whether we're talking liquor, hard liquor, spirits, hard spirits, hard alcohol, or just plain booze, these categories will help us tell some basic differences between what type of liquor you're dealing with.

Whiskey (sometimes Whisky or Bourbon or Scotch)

This can get confusing quickly so pay attention because spelling is especially important. Scotch, Bourbon, and Whisky are all different types of Whiskeys.

Whiskey is only Whisky if it's made in Scotland, Japan, or Canada. Otherwise, it's just Whiskey.

Scotch is a type of Whisky from Scotland that's made with a smokey ingredient called peet. Furthermore, Scotch can be either single malt or blended.

Bourbon is a Whiskey (NOT Whisky) from America with many regulations determining the restrictions required to be called a Bourbon. They must: be a majority of corn as the primary grain in the mash, contain no added ingredients including sugar, be aged in a new charred oak barrel starting at around 60% ABV.

Vodka

Another staple to any home bar is vodka. A spirit with more subtle flavors means it can pair well with just about any flavors! We also have plenty of vodka with added flavors for more creativity. Top brands like Ciroc, Smirnoff, and Ketel One, have showcased all the fun new ways to enjoy Vodka. There are also plenty of new distillers that put their own spin on the ingredients used to bring you a fresh new take on the classic spirit.

Whether you want to spice up your martini or add a little booze to your favorite drink, we have all your vodka needs filled. Our wide range of vodkas and their flavors will make it easy for you to find what you're looking for or enjoy something new!

Gin

The world of Gin has so many options we love to share! A great alternative for a clear liquor, gin sets itself apart by having more fresh and herbal flavors  to it.  Gins flavors are also heavily attributed to the use of Juniper, which tends to be more pine tasting. There is also the unique dry element to gin that adds a little more variety to it.

While most traditional gins lean toward the sweeter side, new Gin distillers are aiming their focus towards the more herbal and citrus sides. Here we curated a vide variety of both newer and traditional gins to make choosing the right gin easy and convenient. If you are looking for a classic or something new and exciting, we have the right gin for you!

Rum

No tropical paradise is complete without a great rum, and we’ve got you covered! This spirit is great for all your tiki inspired cocktails. Rum is distilled with sugar, and the different forms of sugar used will lead it to have different flavor profiles and tasting notes. A more common is pure cane sugar but distillers have found that even the use of molasses can be used to create this wonderful spirit.

Whether you want to go with a classic Daiquiri, which uses a light rum or a classic Mai Tai which calls for more of a darker rum,  we have plenty of variety for you to choose from!

Tequila

There are very few delights in the world that come close to that of enjoying a glass of a well made tequila! The different types of tequila can have fresh citrus notes to more rich and vanilla flavors.

The three common types of tequila are Blanco, which has more hints of pepper and freshness, Reposado, is a more aged tequila that tends to be a little bit sweeter and contains more earthy flavors, Anejo tequila is aged longer and generally has more vanilla and caramel flavors that make it great to enjoy on its own. Our wide range of bands make it easy for you to find the right bottle for you to share or enjoy at your own rate!

Brandy

Brandy is a liquor that is derived from distilling wine or various types of fruit. The different types of fruit used is what can be generally used to describe the type of Brandy it is, such as apple brandy or peach brandy.

We love to enjoy a glass after a great meal or as a pleasant night cap. Although it is commonly drunk neat, Brandy can also be used in various cocktails as supplements for other dark liquors. Grab a bottle and see why so many have enjoyed brandy for all these years.

Liqueur

Having new and fun liqueurs to your bar can open up a whole new world of flavors and recipes for you to try and enjoy different cocktails! They are generally made with high proof liquors and various flavoring that can come from herbs and spices to fruits and sugars. Although they can be enjoyed on their own, liquor is often paired with various liquors to create new cocktails.
