According to the United States government, rye whiskey sold in the United States must meet these requirements: Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% rye. Aged in new charred-oak barrels. Distilled to no more than 160 proof, or 80% alcohol by volume (ABV).
The Bottled in Bond or "BIB" designation is one that holds a spirit to a fairly high standard. The Bottled in Bond or Bonded spirits standards are as follows: Must be aged for a minimum of four years. Must be bottled at precisely 100 proof (50% ABV). Must be made by a single distiller.
To be labeled as Bottled-in-Bond, a whiskey must: Be the product of one distillery and distilled during just one distillation season, which can run from January-June or July-December. Be aged for at least four years. Be bottled at exactly 100 Proof.
