Distillery Information

It was originally distilled in Templeton, Iowa, by bootleggers Frank Schroeder and Alphonse Kerkhoff (whose grandson Keith is involved with its legal production today). During the 1920s Templeton Rye was a favorite of Al Capone, who allegedly called it “the good stuff.” Reintroduced in 2006, it is stil.Rye whiskey can be traced back all the way to 1750 — several decades before the invention of bourbon whiskey. Rye whiskey was created in Pennsylvania when farmers and immigrants attempted to create whiskeys similar to what they would've enjoyed in their home countries.Mount Vernon Rye was first sold in 1870 and was registered in Mida's Criteria to the Hannis Distilling Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were rectifiers of whiskey but they owned two distilleries – DSP 3 Maryland, in Baltimore and DSP 1 West Virginia in Martinsburg. Mount Vernon Rye was made in Baltimore.The company told Iowa economic development officials that Young's owns about 73 percent of the company. Kerkhoff has about a 15 percent stake while co-founder Scott Bush owns about 12 percent.
