Bourbon has been distilled since the 18th century. Although bourbon may be made anywhere in the United States, it is strongly associated with the American South in general, and with Kentucky in particular.
Although historians remain divided on exactly when bourbon was invented and where the name even derives from, we do know that Evan Williams opened the first commercial whiskey distillery in Louisville in 1783 — even before Kentucky was an official state — and that the 1800s were a booming time for the offbeat brown .Oak & Eden was born in Texas, distilled & aged in Indiana, and distributed across the country.
The three main ones are grain, water, and yeast, with the former in particular varying based on geographical origin and style of whiskey. In the broadest sense, whiskey is simply a spirit distilled from a fermented grain mash.Four Grain bourbon is the most complex of all bourbons, yet with a complex recipe comes a harmonious flavor. 4 Grain & Spire begins with a mash bill of 55% corn, 18% rye, 22% wheat, 5% malted barley, then aged in charred American White Oak barrels.
Most distillers put bourbon through distillation twice. In the first step, the bourbon goes through column stills. The second round distills it through attached, heated copper pot stills. These bourbon distillation rounds boost the alcohol content of the liquid and remove the mash and other impurities.
