The History
Alexander Reid
Alexander Reid was a Scottish entrepreneur who founded The Macallan Distillery in 1824. He established the distillery in Craigellachie, a small town in the Speyside region of Scotland, after being granted a license to distill by the government. At the time, the Scotch whisky industry was expanding, and Reid saw an opportunity to create a high-quality product. His distillery was built on a small parcel of land next to the River Spey, a location chosen for its access to fresh, pure water, which is a key ingredient in whisky production. Reid named the distillery "The Macallan," which is derived from the Gaelic term "Magh Eallain," meaning "the fertile ground of St. Allan." This name likely reflected the rich, fertile land on which the distillery was situated, along with a connection to the area's history and religious heritage. The choice of name signified a deep respect for the land and the community, something that would become a hallmark of The Macallan brand as it grew into one of the most prestigious Scotch whisky producers in the world.
