Distillery Information

Chardonnay originated in the Burgundy region of France, and takes its name from a small town in the Maconnais, an area in southern Burgundy that makes relatively inexpensive, high-value chardonnays.Sterling Vineyards was founded in 1964 by Peter Newton and Michael Stone. Newton and Stone were early pioneers of crafting Bordeaux-inspired red wines in California, transforming Napa Valley into the premier winemaking appellation we know today.Wineries typically employ winemakers to produce various wines from grapes by following the winemaking process. This process involves the fermentation of fruit, as well as blending and aging of the juice. The grapes may be from vineyards owned by the winery or may be brought in from other locations. This Napa Valley Chardonnay dry white wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels, 26% of which were new, and undergoes 97% malolactic fermentation and lees stirring for five months. It has 14% alcohol by volume.
While Napa Valley is mostly known for its prodigious Cabernet Sauvignon production, growing conditions are favorable for a wide range of grapes, from warm-weather varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc to cool-weather ones like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The grapes used in Chardonnay white wine are yellow-green at first ripening, and often darken to yellow or green-brown by harvest. These small, round grapes maintain quite high acidity and green fruit flavors in cool climates, but take on tropical fruit flavors in warmth.Chardonnay easily adapts and grows well in merely any type of climate. In colder climates, the wines tend to appear fresh and elegant with citrus and green apple flavors, while in warmer climates they become full-bodied with tropical fruit notes appearing on the nose.Chardonnay can start from a light yellow color and extend through a richer yellow color if it is aged properly in oak barrels. Oak allow a small amount of oxygen to come into contact with the wine, which enhances its color and produces buttery flavors.
