Distillery Information

Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt is a pure malt whisky distilled and aged in Miyagikyo distillery, the second distillery by Japanese whisky producers Nikka Whisky Distilling in Sendai, located in the north of Japan and built in 1969. Nikka Whisky was created by Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japonese whisky.
Miyagikyo malts are described as elegant and fruity. Made from light peated and non-peated malted barley, whiskies distilled in pot stills heated by indirect steam express a signature fruitiness and delicate mouthfeel.
It operates from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, and also owns Ben Nevis. Nikka produces a wide range of single malt, grain and blended whiskies. They are distilled in copper pot stills and matured in a variety of cask types - including ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and even mizunara.
Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of Japanese whisky, founded the Nikka distillery in the 1930s. Today you can visit the original factory, in Yoichi, a town west of Sapporo, close to Otaru.
The company operates a number of distilleries and other facilities in Japan, including two Japanese whisky distilleries, the Yoichi distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaidō (established in 1934), and the Miyagikyo distillery in Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Northern Honshū (established in 1969).
Description. The first stage in the production of malt whisky involves the steeping of malted barley in hot water to extract soluble sugars. The liquid wort is drained off to be fermented and distilled. The residue which remains is Distillers Malt Draff.
