Caperdonich Distillery Information

Caperdonich, meaning “Secret Well” in Gaelic, was a hidden gem of Speyside, Scotland. Established in 1898 by James Grant, the distillery originally served as a sister site to the renowned Glen Grant distillery. Located in the town of Rothes, it gained the nickname "Glen Grant No. 2" due to its close connection to its more famous sibling.

Caperdonich's history is one of resilience and reinvention. After initially operating for just four years, it was closed in 1902 due to the economic challenges of the time. The distillery lay dormant until 1965, when it was revived and rebuilt to meet the rising demand for Scotch whisky. During this second chapter, Caperdonich gained recognition for its quality spirit, which became a sought-after component in many blended whiskies.

The distillery was equipped with traditional copper pot stills, and its water source—the same as Glen Grant—was the pure and pristine Caperdonich Burn. This gave the whisky its distinct Speyside character: fruity, balanced, and full of charm.

In the late 20th century, the whisky landscape shifted again, and Caperdonich fell silent in 2002, ultimately being dismantled in 2011. Today, its legacy lives on in the rare single malt releases from its dwindling stocks, including special peated editions that showcase its experimental spirit.

Caperdonich’s whiskies are now revered as collector's items, capturing the essence of a bygone era in Speyside whisky-making. Its combination of rarity and craftsmanship ensures its place among Scotland’s most cherished "lost" distilleries.
