Pusser's Rum is the product of stills located in Guyana. The rums are blended to create the ideal balance of naturally occurring flavouring compounds known as “esters” and “congeners.” Unlike most rums, Pusser's is all natural and is never artificially flavoured or coloured.
Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength and in accordance with the Admiralty's blending recipe last used when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration on 31 July 1970.
This involved pouring the spirit onto gunpowder. If the powder would burn after being soaked, it indicated that there was sufficient alcohol content – or that the gin was “gunpowder proof” – and the gin was allowed on board. This means that in the UK, a spirit with 57.15% is 100 degrees proof.
Pusser's is blended according to original British Admiralty specifications using five rums from Guyana and Trinidad. Its strength, 54.5% alc./vol. (equal to 95.5 Sykes / 109 proof) conforms to British Navy Stength.
Pusser's Spiced Gunpowder Rum is made with rum which is matured in charred oak bourbon barrels and combined with a selection of tasty ingredients, including banana, chocolate, ginger, cinnamon, and vanilla which all add up to create its outstanding taste.
Finally, some claim that navy rum also needs to be bottled at a specific level of alcohol – enter the term 'navy strength'. In 1866 the British Royal Navy set the standard issuing strength at 4.5 per cent below proof. With 'at proof' spirits being 57% in today's terminology, that's a formidable 54.5% ABV.
