The Tormore is one of the younger Scottish whiskies, the distillery construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1960. It was the first new distillery to be built in the country in the 20th century. One thing we do know with certainty, however, is that, with a licence to distill Irish whiskey from 1608, the Old Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland remains the oldest whiskey distillery in the world.
In 1839, the Dalmore distillery was founded by Alexander Matheson, a merchant adventurer determined to create an exceptional single malt whisky. In 1867, descendants of Clan Mackenzie took control of the distillery.
Distilling started here in 1755 though the oldest remaining building on the site dates back to 1792. It claims to be the oldest continuously-operating distillery in the USA, and it remained open during Prohibition as it was allowed to make that popular product known as 'medicinal whiskey'.
In 2005, Allied Domecq was bought by Pernod Ricard. Tormores management was then in the hands of "Chivas Brothers", a subsidiary of Pernod. In 2022, Elixir Distillers bought the distillery from Pernod Ricard.
Whisky has been distilled in Scotland for hundreds of years. There is some evidence to show that the art of distilling could have been brought to the country by Christian missionary monks, but it has never been proved that Highland farmers did not themselves discover how to distil spirits from their surplus barley.
