Distillery Information

Mount Gay Rum is produced by Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd. of Barbados, the easternmost island of the West Indies. The oldest surviving deed for the company is from 1703, making Mount Gay Rum the world's oldest commercial rum distillery.
It takes every drop of our heritage - past and present - to make Mount Gay rums. From the founding in 1703, to the legendary leadership of Sir John Gay Alleyne. To the digging of our first and only well. The well that still operates to this day, over 300 years later.
Come to the site where Mount Gay has distilled rum for over 300 years to discover how Barbados became the birthplace of rum and how Mount Gay's focus on quality has made us the oldest, continuously running rum distillery in the world.
Barbados has three major rum distilleries, Mount Gay Distilleries, West Indies Rum Distilleries and Foursquare Rum Distilleries. There is also St. Nicholas Abbey who produces rum on a smaller scale.
Comprised of both pot- and column-distilled rums aged for a minimum of ten years, 1703 does, by its very nature, change slightly from year to year, as the subtleties of the chosen casks make themselves known.
Rums originated in the West Indies and are first mentioned in records from Barbados in about 1650. They were called “kill-devil” or “rumbullion” and by 1667 were simply called rum.
