The distillery owned by Diageo. The site for the distillery was chosen for its access to clear spring water from Lochan-Doire-Uaine and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs. Set in mountain scenery, Dalwhinnie is the highest distillery in Scotland with a visitors centre at 1,154 ft (352 m) above sea level.

The current owners are Diageo. The distillery has suffered two periods of long closure. These were due to a catastrophic fire (1934-1938) and a major refurbishment (1992-1995). Dalwhinnie may be remote but it is one of Diageo's most visited distilleries.
Based in the Highland village of Dalwhinnie, this distillery is technically in the Speyside region, but they refer to their product themselves as a Highland Whisky.
