Sauza Tequila Import Company is a producer of tequila located in Tequila, a municipality of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. It was founded in 1873 when Don Cenobio Sauza started La Perseverancia distillery. Sauza Tequila Import Company is owned by Beam Suntory, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
It is also the home of Casa Sauza®, where we've crafted the region's finest tequila for over 140 years.
In 2005, the company Beam Global Spirits & Wine, acquired the Tequila Sauza brand, including it in its portfolio, which until then had 16 brands of spirits, becoming the second most important brand in the portfolio. Years later Beam was incorporated into the market as a public company, Beam Inc.
Gold Tequila is typically a Mixto, that gets its color from caramel coloring added to the Tequila before fermentation. If the brand doesn't state “100% agave”, it added coloring and sugar to obtain the gold color. Gold Tequilas are not typically aged, and usually contains only about 51% agave Tequila.
In 1873, Cenobio Sauza purchased the La Antigua Cruz distillery from Don Felix Lopez for 5,000 pesos. Sauza had formerly been the general manager of that operation. The distillery had been founded in 1805, and is, along with La Rojeña, founded in 1812, among the oldest operating tequila distilleries in Mexico.
