Distillery Information

Ole Smoky has been making moonshine in the Smoky Mountains ever since our ancestors settled in the area over a hundred years ago—but it wasn't until Tennessee state law changed that we were able to legally open up our first federally licensed distillery in Gatlinburg.
In the first decades of the 21st century, commercial distilleries have adopted the term for its outlaw cachet and begun producing their own legally sanctioned, novelty "moonshine", including many flavored varieties, that in some sense continue its tradition, generally having a similar method and/or location of ...
Ingredients mostly included corn, rye, and sugar, although it can be made with anything that ferments. The majority of moonshine found in the south is created from maize, and because of its commonalities to whiskey in the distillation process, it's identical to corn whiskey.Making moonshine has two main steps: fermentation and distillation. Fermentation is the process of yeast breaking down the sugars in the grains to produce alcohol. Once the fermentation process is complete, the “moonshine mash” (fermented grains and yeast) is sent to the still. The Smokies got their name from the Cherokee people. They called it “Shaconage” (shah-con-ah-jey) which means “place of the blue smoke.” The name comes from the blue mist that floats above the peaks of the mountains. European settlers moved to the mountains in the late 1700s. Life for them was very hard.
