The bulk of Sazerac Rye Whiskey is currently produced and bottled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky, and now a small portion of Sazerac Rye Whiskey produced and aged at Buffalo Trace Distillery will be bottled at the Sazerac House.Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky, United States; at Domaine Sazerac de Segonzac in Cognac, France; and at Paul John Distillery in Goa, India. We have additional impressive locations in New Orleans, Montréal, London, Cork and Sydney, to name a few.In the United States, rye whiskey is, by law, made from a mash of at least 51 percent rye. (The other ingredients in the mash are usually corn and malted barley.) It is distilled to no more than 160 U.S. proof (80% abv) and aged in charred, new oak barrels.
Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey is rumored to be made from a mash of 51% rye, 39% corn and 10% malted barley.
In 1992, Sazerac acquired the George T. Stagg Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, at which time the company's primary focus became the production of bourbon whiskey, a product that is primarily distilled, aged, and bottled in Kentucky, later changing its name to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in 1999.
Made today at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, which is owned by the Sazerac Company, Sazerac Rye offers aromas of vanilla and anise, with subtle notes of banana and spice on a smooth finish. While Sazerac's trademark rye is not marketed with an exact age statement, estimates place it at around 4 to 6 years old.The recipe requires just four ingredients: rye whiskey, a sugar cube, Peychaud's Bitters, and anise liqueur. It is one of the best examples of a well-balanced cocktail that you will encounter, with the anise, bitters, and sugar perfectly accenting a spicy rye.
