Italian company buys majority of Sagamore Spirit Rye Whiskey founded by Kevin Plank. BALTIMORE — There is a new majority owner of Sagamore Spirit, a Baltimore-based rye whiskey brand and distillery. Illva Saronno Holding S.p.A., an Italian company, has purchased a majority of Sagamore Spirit's shares.Sagamore Spirit Rye Whiskey is a blend of two straight rye mash bills, aged 4 to 6 years in high-char American oak barrels. The first is a high-rye, which adds notes of cinnamon and clove, and the second, a low-rye, contributes notes of caramel, honey, and citrus peel.
Illva Saronno Holding SpA, known for the popular Italian liqueur Disaronno, announced Thursday that it purchased a majority stake in Sagamore Spirit and plans to move its North American headquarters to Baltimore Peninsula in South Baltimore, where Sagamore's distillery is located.In the United States, rye whiskey is, by law, made from a mash of at least 51 percent rye. (The other ingredients in the mash are usually corn and malted barley.) It is distilled to no more than 160 U.S. proof (80% abv) and aged in charred, new oak barrels.
