Distillery Information

The Oban distillery is located in the west of Scotland in the small harbour town of the same name, which has grown up around the distillery. The Whisky belongs to the 'Classic Malts Selection. The fermented wort is heated in Oban's copper pot wash still to separate out alcohol from water. The vapor rises through the still and is condensed back into liquid in the worm tub condenser.
This is a great mellow Highlands alternative to the more peaty high end scotches. The price has gone up significantly recently, though, which prevents it from receiving a 5 star rating. It's a great $50 bottle but not an $80 bottle. Oban 14 is an old friend that I come back to like a comfort food.
When brothers Hugh and John Stevenson arrived at the frontier of the Hebrides Islands in 1793, they found little more than a natural harbor and a windswept view. Here they opened the Oban Brewing Company, their 'Cowbell Ale' being the first production. They started distilling whisky the following year.
Oban is made using only the finest barley, malted to the distillery's own particular specification. Partly germinated barley is gently dried in a kiln where a light peat smoke gives the malt a distinctive character and taste. The result is the smoky, malty dryness in the flavour and finish of Oban.
Oban distillery (/ˈoʊbən/ OH-bən; Scottish Gaelic: Taigh-stail an Òbain) is a whisky distillery in the Scottish west coast port of Oban. Established in 1794, it was built before the town of the same name, which sprang up later in the surrounding craggy harbour.
Due to the strong influence of Scottish settlers on early colonial southern New Zealand, Oban was named after Oban in Scotland (meaning “The Little Bay” in Scottish Gaelic). The town's main industries are fishing, and tourism and it serves as a base for sightseers, hikers, birdwatchers, divers and hunters.
