Distillery Information

The Kaiyo Cask Strength is contradictory in many ways - it doesn't say “Japanese whisky” anywhere on the label, yet it is distilled and aged in Japan. They use mizunara casks to age all of their spirit, an expensive but unique touch that differentiates the core Kaiyo line.Kaiyo Whisky is a very intriguing distillery indeed - being the brainchild of master blender Jeff Karlovitch (who is a veteran of the parent company of Bunnahabhain and the blender behind Lost Distillery's whisky recreations).
The Kaiyo comes in middle of the pack, and I would say it's a decent value for Japanese whisky. Woodsy and floral at the same time, with the traditional caramel notes in the finish. I did not detect the briny, sea salt notes as some have had. It's a good guy, but not in the same league as Nikka or Hibiki.
Kaiyo Whisky Mizunara the Single is a premium Japanese whisky aged in Mizunara oak casks, resulting in a distinctive flavor profile with notes of sandalwood, coconut, and vanilla, with an alcohol content of 43% ABV.
Located at the base of Mount Fuji, this Kirin-owned distillery is the largest distillery in the world, producing 12 million litres of whisky each year.
Sandwiched between Japan's soaring Southern Alps and the towering Central Alps, at just over 2,600 feet, Mars Shinshu is Japan's highest whisky distillery. The Hombo family have been distilling for more than a century and they added whisky to their repertoire in 1949.
Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka and father of Japanese whisky. In 1918, a young Japanese man with an ambition to make genuine whisky went alone to Scotland to unveil the secret of whisky making.
