Distillery Information

In 2021, Knappogue Castle Irish Whiskey was bought by Irish Distillers, an subsidiary off Pernod Richard.
The three main ones are grain, water, and yeast, with the former in particular varying based on geographical origin and style of whiskey. In the broadest sense, whiskey is simply a spirit distilled from a fermented grain mash.Knappogue Castle Single Malt Irish Whiskey is named for the castle which inspired it, but the word itself has a meaning of its own. Knappogue (pronounced Nah' Pogue) translates to hill of the kiss in Gaelic. Such a romantic word is only fitting for such a beautiful and iconic landmark. Nah' Pogue.
Final Note: I'll have to say that Knappogue Castle 12 is one of the better 12 year old single malts that I've encountered in recent years. By 'better' I mean it is very well integrated, smooth, and full of a bouquet of countless tasting notes (I had to pair it down substantially).
The original castle was built in 1467 by Seán Mac Conmara (anglicised as MacNamara), son of Síoda Mac Conmara, and is a good example of a late medieval tower house. The castle's name translates as "castle of the place abounding in little hills".Knappogue Castle is a tower house, built in 1467 and expanded in the mid-19th century. Located in Quin, County Clare, the castle has played host to two Irish presidents, as well as other heads of state, including General de Gaulle.
Famously smooth and flavorful, Knappogue Castle Single Malt is made with pure Irish spring water and malted barley. “Malted” means that the barley has been germinated and then had its growth halted by heat. Famous for producing exceptionally smooth whiskey, malted barley is then dried in ovens without the use of peat.
The Four Types of Irish Whiskey are Single Malt Irish Whiskey (both peated and unpeated), Single Grain Irish Whiskey, Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey and Blended Irish Whiskey.
