Distillery Information

It is the only remaining gin distillery in Plymouth. The building, constructed in 1431, has been in operation as a gin distillery since 1793. It opens onto what is now Southside Street. The established distilling business of Fox & Williamson began the distilling of the Plymouth brand in 1793.
The story behind what we know today as navy strength gin began during the first 'gin boom' in the 18th century. The Royal Navy legislated that there had to be a certain amount of gin on each vessel while they were sailing on the high seas. Gin was required on board to help fight illness and diseases which were rife.Black Friars Distillery, the working home of Plymouth Gin since 1793, is the oldest working gin distillery in England and is situated in the heart of the historic port city of Plymouth.
After establishing themselves as an iconic duo in Seattle's bar scene, Anu Apte and Chris Elford decided that they would fill the city's need for a tiki bar. At Navy Strength, they turn inauthentic tiki on its head with an eclectic menu that celebrates multiculturalism.
The most traditional and still the most common method for gin distillation. A mix of juniper and other botanicals is steeped in neutral spirit which has been reduced in strength with water (normally to approx. 50% alc./vol.).
Gin as we know it today, is a distilled alcohol that by definition must include the characteristic aroma and flavour of the juniper berry. Even the name itself is derived from the Dutch word for juniper 'genever', or the French 'genièvre'.
