When John Mohler Studebaker joined his brothers in 1858, the company had attained prominence in helping to supply wagons to the booming agricultural market in the Midwest.The origins of the Studebaker Corporation date back to 1852, when brothers Henry and Clement Studebaker opened a blacksmith shop in South Bend, Indiana. Studebaker eventually became a leading manufacturer of horse-drawn wagons and supplied wagons to the U.S. Army during the Civil War.In November 1967, Studebaker was merged with the Worthington Corporation to form Studebaker-Worthington. The Studebaker name disappeared from the American business scene in 1979, when McGraw-Edison acquired Studebaker-Worthington, except for the still existing Studebaker Leasing, based in Jericho, NY.In 1967, Studebaker merged with Wagner Electric and then the Worthington Corp. to form Studebaker-Worthington. The name Studebaker disappeared in 1979 when McGraw-Edison bought the company.
