Distillery Information

Zarza Tequila is distilled by Maestro Tequilero (Master Distiller of Tequila) Agustín Sánchez at the Destiladora del Valle de Tequila Distillery, aka the Casa Maestri distillery, located right in the city of Tequila.May 16, 2023
Of the nearly 140 tequila distilleries in Mexico, hers is the only one that's led and operated solely by women. Melly Barajas walks through a field of blue agave plants in the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. Most Tequilas come from the state of Jalisco, where the actual town of Tequila, Mexico resides. For starters, in order for a spirit to be called “Tequila” it MUST come from one of five authorized states in Mexico: Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, or Tamaulipas.A drink similar to tequila likely originated around 1000 B.C. among the Olmec people in what is now Southeastern Mexico. This is known as pulque and is made from agave, the same plant that is used to distill as the liquor we know today.
