Knob Creek is an American brand of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey produced by Beam Suntory (a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan) at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky.
It is produced by the Knob Creek Distillery, which is located in Clermont, Kentucky, and has been making whiskey since 1795. This rye whiskey is made from a blend of the finest rye grains and aged in new, charred American oak barrels for a minimum of 9 years.
100% RYE (95% RYE, 5% MALTED RYE) AGED AT LEAST 4 YEARS. 100 PROOF (50% Alc/Vol) Appearance: Extra rich, unfiltered deep amber color. Nose: Spicy and detailed, showing mint, black pepper, and vanilla with hints of orange and oak.
Rye's mash bill must, by law, consist of at least 51% rye. Most rye whiskeys use malted barley or corn as the other grains. As with bourbon, ground grain is mixed with water and a bit of mash from a previous distillation, in what's known as a sour-mash process. This introduces yeasts from the previous distillation.
Knob Creek Rye is patiently aged for seven years in deeply charred barrels and bottled at 100 proof to give it the signature Knob Creek full flavor. At seven years, Knob Creek Rye achieves its optimal flavor profile resulting in the perfect balance between sweet barrel notes and spicy rye character.
It's a widely available and relatively affordable rye whiskey from Jim Beam, one of the largest American whiskey distilleries also known for Basil Hayden, Baker's, Knob Creek Bourbon, and Booker's.
Beam doesn't disclose its mashbill, but it's believed Knob Creek Rye is a barely legal rye at just over 51% rye. For supposedly being a little over 51% rye, the nose is surprisingly expressive and more inline with higher percentage rye whiskeys. Fresh cracked rye grain, green apple, and charred oak mingle together.
