In 2006, the Coppola family purchased the historic Château Souverain in Sonoma County, not far from your wine store Santa Rosa, making it home to the wines of his by then popular Diamond Collection. This became Francis Ford Coppola Winery. The inspiration for the Diamond Collection was a bottle of 1906 Claret we found in the cellar of the Napa Valley property we purchased in 1975. I designed a new label reminiscent of this old bottle and created the Diamond Collection Black Label Claret, which is our company's most recognized offering.
Titled “It Takes Time to Make a Diamond”, the campaign connects with consumers by telling emotive stories of notable individuals who have faced and persevered through adversity, recognizing as its first subject the winery's founder, famed film director Francis Ford Coppola.Winemaking in the Coppola family dates back to the 1920s when Francis's grandfather, Agostino Coppola, made wine in the basement of his New York apartment building using concrete vats he constructed himself.Coppola's reputation as a filmmaker was cemented with the release of The Godfather (1972), which revolutionized the gangster genre of filmmaking, receiving strong commercial and critical reception. The Godfather won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with Mario Puzo).
Diamonds were formed billions of years ago and are extremely rare because so few are able to survive the difficult journey from the pits of the earth to reach the earth's surface. From the diamonds that are being mined today, only about 50 percent are thought to be high enough quality to be sold on the diamond market.
